44th Annual Hull Chess Congress (2007)

The Hull Congress took place on 2-4 November 2007, Student Union, University of Hull. Just under a hundred players took part. They played in four tournaments (under 95, under 135, under 165 and under 200) and according to a new prize system distributing prizes according to how many points players scored individually rather than in which place they finished. The new system, with the reintroduction of the Intermediate and a capping on the Open, gave rise to some of the most competitively fought tournaments seen at a Hull Congress, with no one player managing to win all five games and to claim the top prize of £250.

The Congress saw the return of many 'old' faces to the Congress and appearance of many new faces who sprung welcome surprises in each of the tournaments.

I hope all players who read this page enjoyed playing in Congress. We certainly enjoyed being hosts to you, and we hope to see you again next year at the Congress, and perhaps also at our Rapid play event at the University on Sunday 6 April (details will follow soon).

I have listed the prizewinners below and shall post out cheques to prizewinners who did not attend the prize giving ceremony by the end of the week.

Many thanks for making our event a success!

Mark
